Richard Yates' Classical Guitar Transcriptions

Publications

A collection of articles and music transcribed for solo classical guitar gathered from ten years of the popular series in the journal Soundboard. Each of the music scores is accompanied by an article describing the process of transcription for the guitar, the history of the music and composer, and performance suggestions. All pieces are fully fingered and suitable for intermediate to advanced players. 152 pages.

“It is just what you would expect it to be from Richard Yates; high quality transcriptions/ arrangements of a wide range of classical repertoire. Includes one of the Brahms Op. 39 Waltzes, glad to see that; other interesting pieces are Edward MacDowell's "To A Wild Rose", Liszt's "Wiegenlied", Satie's, "Je te veux", and Handel's well known "Sarabande con Variazioni" - in A minor now. A thoughtful analysis of each piece is included. Not surprising as it is all taken from his 1996-2006 series in Soundboard magazine.”   Andrew M. Schulman

Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) was the first American composer to achieve an international reputation. His music is lyrical, intimate, uncluttered, and with a unique and quickly recognizable harmonic palette.

MacDowell's music does not aim for virtuosic display and obscure intellectual pleasures but, rather, it is about what is personal and what is felt by the individual in common circumstances. The classical guitar is at its best with music of smaller proportions that is personal, evocative, and imbued with opportunities for subtle, expressive nuances in performance and so is eminently suited to MacDowell's music. This collection includes his most famous composition, To a Wild Rose, as well as ten other beautiful guitar solos in both standard notation and tablature. An outstanding recording, by Aryeh Eller, of all of the music is included.

‘The Peer Gynt Suite’ may be Edvard Grieg's most famous composition. Its melodies have insinuated themselves into our culture so that they are now universally familiar. The movements are: Morning Song, Asa's Death, Anitra's Dance, and In the Hall of the Mountain King. This edition presents, for the first time, the entire suite in a version for solo guitar. This is a substantial work for the guitarist that, while requiring solid technique, is quite rewarding for both the player and the audience. Also included is a transcription of Grieg's beautiful Solveig's Song. There is a confusing error in the introductory text. Click here for the correct version.

“I was surprised just how well these transcriptions really worked, and if any of you have yet to hear any of this material, and only think of Grieg as the writer of the Piano Concerto and the Holberg Suite, think again.”

Chris Dumigan, Classical Guitar Magazine, May 2003. Full Text of the review.

'Edvard Grieg: 16 Lyric Pieces' is published by Mel Bay Publications and includes sixteen solo classical guitar transcriptions in standard notation with extensive performance and analytical notes for each piece. The joining of Grieg's music and the classical guitar seems to be a most obvious and fruitful endeavor, yet, with a few exceptions, this wonderful music has been overlooked by guitarists. This collection presents transcriptions from Grieg's best known and loved piano works. 72 pages.

"...an eloquent sample of this renewed Chopin fervor."
Piero Viti, GuitArt Magazine. Full Text of the review.

“Both in the range of works included and in the manner in which they have been transcribed, Yates has made the music of this popular composer accessible to guitarists.”
Stephen Dick, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, December 2002. Full Text of the review.

'Frederic Chopin - 21 Selected Pieces' is published by Guitar Solo Publications. It includes twenty-one solo classical guitar transcriptions in both standard notation and tablature with introductory notes for each piece. Although this music is eminently suited to the guitar, many of the pieces have never been transcribed before. 165 pages. Cover art by Jaclyne Scardova.

"This transcription deserves to join the company of Williams' Brahms, Bream's Schubert,
and a select few other major adaptations of great music."

Stephen Kenyon, Classical Guitar Magazine, November 2001. Full Text of the review.

Felix Mendelssohn's Op. 54 variations are a blend of types that show the range of both Mendelssohn's skill at composition and his knowledge of history. Strict canon and fugue textures appear next to free variations and lyrical, accompanied song. And yet, the set as a whole is a coherent, progressive and unified elaboration of the theme. Although transferring this music to two guitars was difficult, the result is a beautiful piece that is mesmerizing and kaleidoscopic in performance. Written in standard notation only. Includes landscape-format score and portrait-format parts. 48 total pages.  More information here.
