Wordle trainer help

Wordle is a variation on several similar games (Jotto, Word Mastermind) and was developed by software engineer Josh Wardle and can be played here. The version here follows his but also allows unlimited guesses, the ability to add words to the database, and has a couple of optional charts and lists that can help solve the puzzle and learn the patterns that will make you a better Wordler.

Begin by clicking on the 'reset' button. The program selects a hidden, five-letter, target word. You can type a five letter word into the form and click on 'enter'. The colors of the letters of what you typed will change to give you information about your guess:

Red: This letter does not occur anywhere in the target word.
Yellow: This letter appears in the target word but not in the same position as in your guess.
Green: This letter appears in the target word in the same position as in your guess.
Type a second guess, using what you learned from the first one.

Continue until you solve the puzzle.

If a word that you try is not in the database, you can add it by typing the word, lower case only, in the form's space and clicking 'submit'. Please add only legitimate five-letter English words. You can then try that word again.

If you are stumped you can click on the 'give up' button to show the target word so that you can work out how you might have solved it.

Click on 'reset' at any time to start a new game with a new target word.

When resetting, you also have the option to check the box that indicates that you want to see charts. You can select or unselect these assists only when resetting the puzzle. The charts rearrange and display only the information that you already can infer from your guesses. They show the kinds of deductions that you can learn to make with practice.

The first is a table of all letters, in order of their frequency in English, and their status in your guesses. There is a chart that arranges the letters in your guesses to show where they can possibly fall in the target word. There will also be a list of five words displayed that are a sample of the ones most dissimilar to those already chosen.

The last help field is for showing all anagrams of any four or five letters that are in the database and that do not use any of the letters that are shown as red.

I have found that basic Wordle is fairly easy if you start with a good sequence of guesses. This sequence ideally uses the most frequent letters in English words without duplications. The best list that I have come up with is "float, bring, decks, humps, wonky or windy" which, in 25 letters, uses 21 different ones and so uses all but the five least frequent letters.

Try "hard Wordle" by adding the restriction that after you find any green letter you must use that one, in that slot, in all subsequent guesses and any yellow letters must be used in some slot in subsequent guesses.
