Richard Yates' Classical Guitar Transcriptions |
MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus
(1756-91)
The piano sonatas
of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are landmarks in the history of Western music.
Except for a few scattered movements, guitarists have had very little access to
these marvelous works. There is the wonderful transcription of Piano Sonata,
K.331 done by William Kanengiser, but this has been the only complete sonata
available to guitarists. This sonata constitutes a substantial addition to any
guitarist's repertoire and merits prominent placement in recital programs. The
difficulty level is fairly high, but not beyond most advanced players.

Adagio from the Piano Sonata, K.332 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This is a more challenging piece than others that are offered here, but the
beautiful melody it contains is worth the difficulties. Take care to play the
accompaniment much softer than the melody. I have included two free pages of
suggestions about playing the ornaments; they
need close attention to be played effectively. Notice that both of the whole
measure trills with accompaniment, a common feature of Mozart's piano music,
can be played without abbreviating them - a rare event in guitar
transcriptions. The MIDI
sound file of the Adagio will give you some idea of how the piece sounds, but a
piano recording will be more helpful. [3 pages, 175KB]
