Richard Yates' Classical Guitar Transcriptions |
MASSENET, Jules
(1842-1912)
Saltarello. From a collection of ten piano pieces (opus 10). The Saltarello presents a task for pianists to maintain duple
rhythm in the left hand against triple rhythm in the left. Guitarists do not
have bass and melody so conveniently assigned to each hand so this piece is
rather challenging. I suggest learning it at a very slow tempo and counting 12
sixteenths to the measure so that each note falls on a count. Eventually each
half measure will become a rhythmic unit as you become familiar with it. It can
be quite dazzling at the Allegro vivace full
tempo.

Elégie.
Another one of Massenet’s famous lyric melodies
sits very comfortably on the guitar.
The difficulty level is quite moderate. [2 pages, 163KB]

Meditation from the opera Thais. Massenet’s most famous piece can fit on the guitar
only with considerable modification of the accompaniment. I have transformed it
into a figuration more suitable for the guitar. All of the harmony is
preserved. This piece was suggested to me by Sam Culotta
from the newsgroup rec.music.classical guitar. [3
