Richard Yates' Classical Guitar Transcriptions |
BRAHMS, Johannes
(1833-97)
Waltz, Op. 39, No. 9 by Johannes Brahms. I had to make more than the usual
number of modifications to this waltz to adapt it to the guitar. In particular,
some chord voicings have been changed (although the basic harmonies have not).
It is an easy piece. MIDI
sound file of the Waltz. [10/8/99, 1 page, 37KB]

Waltz, Op. 39, No. 11 by Johannes
Brahms. This is a slow but rhythmic piece with interesting harmonic changes.
It's heritage sounds more like Eastern Europe than Vienna. Try to tightly
articulate the second beats of the measures. Closely following the indicated
guide fingers will ease the few difficulties. MIDI sound file of the
Waltz. [10/6/99, 1 page, 50KB]

Sarabande 1 by Johannes Brahms. There are
very few guitar transcriptions of Brahms' music because he used the full range
of the piano and wrote in complex harmonies that often cannot be reduced reasonably
to the guitar's six strings. This short Sarabande is an exception and is
comparatively easy to play on the guitar. I have been undecided about which of
two versions to offer here, however. One uses 'drop D' tuning for the sole
purpose of obtaining the correct chord inversion in bar 11. The second beat is
a Neapolitan Sixth chord (a triad on the flatted second scale degree) in first
inversion. Preserving this inversion is important, but the tuning makes other
sections more difficult. I have included both versions with this file so you
may play the one that you prefer. The MIDI sound file of both
versions of the Sarabande 1. [10/2/99, 2 pages, 74KB]

Sarabande 2 by Johannes Brahms. This is a more contrapuntal
piece than the Sarabande 1, and left-hand fingerings are correspondingly more
difficult in order to maintain notes for their required durations. Feel free to
alter these as you need to. The MIDI sound file of the
Sarabande 2. [ 1 page, 62KB]
